The Katsaros distillery carries a heavy 160-year history. It is a 4th generation family business based in Tyrnavos. It is the oldest ouzo distillery in Greece and the whole world, as ouzo, this national product, was born there. It all started in the Tyrnavos region in 1856. Nikolaos Katsaros' distillation apparatus created a distillate with exceptional flavor and unique aroma. At that moment, ouzo was born. The original recipe created by Katsaros Ouzo was kept as a secret family heirloom. With 14 herbs and seeds, with the crystal-clear water of Mount Olympus and the well-hidden secret, we still create high-quality ouzo today.
Katsaros Ouzo quickly gained friends and became synonymous with Greek temperament and Greek cuisine. In 1889, the year of the 4th Zappeion Olympiad, it was already a recognized and award-winning drink. As a pioneering merchant of the time, Nikolaos Katsaros ensured that ouzo would go beyond the country's borders.
The next generation, in 1931, finds Katsaros Ouzo being exported to France, Egypt, America, and having retail stores in Larissa, Thessaloniki, Athens, and New York. Today, they continue to distill ouzo as they did back then, with the same recipe from 1856, but in state-of-the-art distilleries and tanks, with an automated bottling and production line with a capacity of 2,000 bottles per hour. Everything is made with experience and knowledge, with the sole purpose of producing absolutely high-quality spirits.
